Guided Tours - Connemara in a Day
A good Irish Breakfast prepares you for a trip to Connemara, a
wild and rugged area of West Galway. When we leave Cong we drive
around the shore of Lough Corrib, the second largest Lake in the
country. It is said that there are 365 Islands on the Lough. This
is a wonderland for fishermen.
We head for Maam Cross. If your lucky you will see a sheep fair.
Driving on to Clifden we see the Maamturk mountains & the
Twelve Pins. Set between the Atlantic Ocean, 12 Ben Mountains
and preserved boglands, lies the town of Clifden on the Coast
of Connemara. It is a popular destination with good fish restaurants.
Onto Letterfrack where the writer Brendan Behan spent time at
a boys reformatory. Kylemore Abbey, the home of the Benedictine
nuns, stands at the edge of the lake surrounded by woodlands.
The gothic castle was built by Mitchell Henry, an English businessman
in 1865 for his wife. The grounds and part of the Abbey are open
to the public.
We return to Ashford Castle in the afternoon.
